Hawks Fight to Double Overtime Loss; Owens Shines

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Jerame Owens' monster double-double with added extra efforts weren't enough to get Hilbert over the hump as the Hawks battled to a 100-98 double-overtime Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference loss to Pitt-Greensburg today.  Owens finished with 20 points, 27 rebounds, and added four assists, three blocks and two steals in 46 minutes of action.

Sean Weisansal posted 24 points and passed for six assists while stealing and blocking three balls.  Also reaching double-figures were Jordan Kumro who knocked down 50% of his attempts for 15 points and new-comer Kirkland Ottey who tallied 14 points off the bench in his first game in royal and white.

Greensburg had five guys reach double-digits led by Jerell Figueroa's 26 points (7-7 from foul line) and six assists.  Marcus Thomas netted 18 points and 14 rebounds while Mike Connelly came off the bench for 16 points before fouling out.

Hilbert shot 40.4% for the game but only 27.3% in overtime.  Greensburg strung together a 54.3% 2nd half effort and stayed focused with a 46.2% field goal percentage in overtime.

Hilbert dominated the boards, out-rebounding the visitors 62-49 and finished with 27 offensive caroms.  Jerame Owens picked the plexiglas for 10 offensive rebounds just himself while the Bobcats ended with 17 as a team.

Hilbert scored only six more points in the paint (56-50) and six more points off second chances (20-14) but the Hawks' 22 turnovers led to 24 Greensburg points.

Hilbert jumped out to an early 10-point lead (16-6) in just five minutes of action.  Weisansal and Owens did most of the offensive damage during that stretch. The Hawks held a double-digit lead for most of the 1st half but allowed the Bobcats to cut it under ten before intermission.

The second period's pace picked back up as if neither team went to their locker room.  Hilbert stretched their lead, Greensburg responded and cut the difference to single digits, but all the while, Hilbert was in control.

From 12:38 to 10:24, Hilbert went on a 12-0 run, and Sean Weisansal scored the first 10 points on his own.  At that point, Hilbert held a 67-49 lead.

Slowly, the Bobcats clawed back and took their first lead in the game at 2:21 after a made bucket and two accompanying free throws after an intentional foul was called.

Hilbert stayed in it when Kirkland Ottey sank his first free throw with 0:20 on the clock. Jerame Owens picked up an offensive rebound off Ottey's missed second shot and dumped the ball back into the paint to Ottey who made another trip to the line with 0:14 remaining.  Ottey calmly sank both shots with perfect ball rotation to give Hilbert a two-point edge.  But with 0:04 seconds left, Jerell Figueroa sank two freebies and sent the game to overtime.

The first overtime period started with Owens and Trevor Stark hooking up for a bucket just before Greensburg scored a traditional three-point play in transition to take the 85-84 lead back.  Hilbert worked hard on the glass and Weisansal finally found the bottom of the net after three Hilbert offensive rebounds.

After Hilbert hit only one of two free throws, Greensburg knotted the game again at 1:09.

The Hawks had a great defensive stop in the paint when Ottey stole the ball from a big man who exposed it low; that led to another Weisansal jumper at 0:13 (89-87, Hilbert).

In a desperation attempt at the end of the first overtime, Joe Mancini launched a three-point shot, and was given a chance for the win when a Hilbert player was whistled for the foul.  Mancini, standing all alone on the foul line and hearing the loud and proud Hilbert fans to his right, missed the first shot under pressure but sank the next two and gave the fans another five minutes of excitement.

Jerame Owens scored a tip-in early in the second extra period but 12-seconds later, the Bobcats knocked down a long ball at 4:35.  With a pair of free throws by the visitors, the Hawks found themselves down by three points.

Kirkland Ottey found himself at the foul line again and hit both ends of the double bonus to cut the deficit to one point.

Both teams traded buckets and when Jerame Owens collected a traditional three-point play, the game was once again deadlocked at 1:23.

The visitors scored in the paint while Hilbert hit a short jumper to force the game's fifth tie with 0:42 on the clock (98-98).  Hilbert's defense came up with a big steal in the paint but their transition into a quick shot allowed Greenburg to corral the miss and sprint to the other end of the floor for an easy score.

With just under four ticks on the clock, Hilbert got a good look at the rim but the ball bounced off as the time expired.

After today's sets of games, Penn State Behrend and Greensburg sit in a two-way tie for first place at 7-1.  Hilbert, Medaille and Bradford are stockpiled into the next level at 5-2.

Hilbert (11-3) has one challenging week of competition.  The Hawks will host Behrend on Monday, January 19 and then travel to Medaille College on Thursday, January 22.

Junior Jerame Owens is 29 points shy of joining Trevor Stark in the 1,000 point club this 2014-15 season.
