Volleyball Suffered First Loss of Season at Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's volleyball team ran into a red-hot Knights from Geneseo tonight and suffered a 3-0 loss to the undefeated hosts.
 
The night opened with an evenly played first set.  Geneseo (4-0) jumped ahead early, but the Hawks battled back and took their largest lead (11-9) after Ashley Viengmay earned her second service ace to force a Geneseo time-out.  Geneseo built a 20-17 advantage and coasted to a 25-20 victory.

The second set was competitive early.  Both teams traded points until Geneseo began to pull away after a 14-14 tie.  A few Hilbert hitting errors and back-to-back kills by the Knights, the score suddenly turned into a 19-15 game which finished at 25-18 for the hosts.

The final set of the evening was emotional.  The Hawks exploded and went on a three-point run (16-13) which started with an Amanda Binder kill.  Geneseo connected for seven unanswered points before Morgan Ott  and Binder each added kills (18-20).  The Knights held the Hawks at bay and never relinquished their small lead to take a 25-23 match.

Amanda Binder led Hilbert with 11 kills (.231).  Morgan Ott was credited with 14 assists, three more than Kayla Lewis' double-digit effort (11).  Ashley Viengmay reached for game-high 13 digs.

Geneseo finished the match with 10 more kills than the Hawks and ended with .224 hitting percentage. 

Hilbert (2-1) returns to action this weekend at the Golden Flyer Invitational hosted by Nazareth College September 5th and 6th.  Hilbert is scheduled to play Medaille and RIT Friday and Buffalo State and Fredonia State Saturday. 

The Hawks then host their home opener Wednesday, September 10th against Alfred State College.
