Box Score

SOUTH BUFFALO, N.Y. – Megan Smith and Nikki Schneider combined for five goals, but the Hilbert College women's lacrosse team just didn't have enough scoring punch to keep up with Medaille College today.  The Mavericks beat the Hawks 17-8 in the 5:30pm game played at Pierce Field in Mulroy Park situated in South Buffalo.  Medaille improved to 6-4 while Hilbert slipped to 2-7 overall.

Medaille jumped out to a 6-0 lead with Denay O'Connor netting three times by 13:56.  Hilbert's Jordan Botsford found her first score of the season and was led to the frame by Kelly Mandell's pass as the Hawks broke the offensive string by the visitors.  Hilbert's Nikki Schneider traded scores with Emily Victor but Medaille's Emily Brophy tallied a pair of goals for a 9-2 lead.  Just a half-second prior to the horn sounding for half-time, Smith beat Mia Wagner in frame for the 9-3 score.

The second period was more competitive as each team alternated scoring.  Hilbert's Kelly  Mandell starting the flow, Megan Smith added two and Schneider scored her last on the day at 17:28 to cut  the spread to 12-7.

Medaille's O'Connor started a five-goal run, with Brophy netting the other four to find her 43rd score of the year.  Kristi Mergenhagen finished the Hawks' scoring at 4:45.

Stephanie Glaza was credited with six Hilbert saves after facing 23 shots on goal.  Medaille held a 28-23 advantage in shots and won twice as many draw controls as the Hawks.  Hilbert hustled to seven more ground balls.

Chantelle Mikolajczak played an aggressive game leading the Hawks with five ground balls and seven shots, yet none made it past the Medaille goalie.  Jordan Botsford, Nikki Schneider and Kylie Reinholz scooped-up three ground balls.

Brophy led the Mavericks with eight goals and one assist and Denay O'Connor added five tallies.

Hilbert returns to action Saturday, April 12 when they celebrate senior day and honor Kristi Mergenhagen and Robbi Bailey prior to their 2pm game against Franciscan University.  The Hawks close their 2014 season at Cazenovia College April 15.
