Softball Suffers First AMCC Loss

Erin Smith Scattered Hits against Behrend
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ERIE, Pa. – Getting a chance to play their first softball game since March 12th, the Hilbert Hawks traveled to northwest PA and surrendered two Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference games to the Penn State Behrend April 2.  Hilbert gave up early runs in both games and fell short with 5-1 and 9-4 defeats to drop to 0-2 in AMCC play.

Victoria Dzaak led the Hawks with 2 RBI's in the second game in the top of the fourth inning.  Behrend grabbed a quick 5-run lead in the bottom of the second before Dzaak's single got the Hawks on the board in the fourth.  Erin Smith went 1 for 2 with one walk and added her RBI in the 6th sandwiched between the Lions double-runs in the 5th and 6th.  With a 9-3 hole to dig out of, Eliza Stringham poked her single to left field in the 7th sending Brittany Hancy home for the 9-4 loss.

Dzaak carried Hilbert through 4.1 innings before Natalie Whitman stepped in the circle for the rest of the way.  Whitman closed with two strike-outs while giving up two hits resulting in two runs.

In the earlier game, Amanda Binder singled through the left side as Hilbert's first base runner with a 2-out count.  Rachel Collier's double to right field pushed Binder home and gave Hilbert it's only lead of the day.  Behrend responded in the bottom of the 1st with two quick base-on-balls, and a sac bunt to load the bases.  The Lions big hitter singled and then advanced off a Hilbert error which gave the runner on second enough time to scoot home for a 2-1 lead.  The hosts chopped away at the ball in the 3rd inning with four hits and 3 RBI for the final 5-1 victory.

Binder went 2 for 3 in the low scoring game.  Jaelyn Gotham went the full six innings giving up seven hits with four walks and three strike outs.

Hilbert hopes to return to action Saturday, April 5th with another AMCC double header in Pittsburgh against La Roche College.
