Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Opens 2014 With Win

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Hilbert College men's basketball team found themselves in a seven-point hole late in the second half but forced a thirteen-point swing and held on for a 66-65 road win at Geneva College tonight.

Jerame Owens grabbed his first double-double in his junior year, scoring 19 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.  Trevor Stark chipped in 14 points and six assists hitting six of nine shots from the field. Sean Weisansal reached for 12 points also behind his impressive five of seven shooting.

Ethan Adamcyzk matched Owens' efforts knocking down 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for Geneva.

Hilbert struggled from the field in the first half, hitting only 11-30 shots.  Stark (4 of 5) and Weisansal (2-3) led the Hawks by the break with nine and four points, respectively.    Geneva built a 27-24 half time lead by sinking one more 3-point shot, and sinking two more foul shots than the Hawks.

Jordan Kumro's three-pointer knotted the game at 27-all on the Hawks' first possession of the second half.   Geneva stretched their lead back to eight points by 8:47, but after that, Hilbert flipped the switch on and stormed back.

Owens' dunk started the rally and three buckets and a pair for free throws later, the scored was even (53-53) after Starks sank a floater down the lane. Kumro hit both free throws to claim the lead for good (55-53) with four minutes remaining.

The Hawks padded the score with a Nehemiah Kornegay lay-up and at traditional three-point play by Owens (60-53).

The Golden Tornadoes cut the deficit, but it was Owens long three-point shot from the point to stretch the score back 65-59.  A Hilbert foul put the hosts at the foul line and both shots were good (65-61).

Sean Weisansal went the charity stripe for double bonus, and made the second.  The Golden Tornadoes went the length of the court, got to the rim and called a quick timeout after the score with 0:24 remaining.

Geneva's full court pressure paid off; they forced a quick Hilbert timeout and then stole the ball and converted a quick lay-up (66-65) at 0:12.

The game ended when time ran out when Geneva's  full-court last ditch effort miss with 0:05 seconds left.

Hilbert returns to Hamburg and hosts their home opener next week against Houghton College November 18.
