HAMBURG, N.Y. – The women's volleyball team at Hilbert College is currently on a three-game winning streak and they sit at the top of the AMCC conference after their 3-1 victory over cross-town rival D'Youville College tonight at the Hafner Recreation Center.
The Hawks used a very balanced offense and controlled the net to improve to 7-10 overall. D'Youville (7-11, 0-1), with a very young team, forced a fourth set after they rallied late in the third set.
For the match, Hilbert earned 41 kills (.148), seven service aces and 10 assisted blocks.
D'Youville's Lara Svensson took home game-high dig honors with 17. Hilbert had three players work for double-digit digs led by
Ashley Viengmay's 14, followed by
Jordan Botsford's 12 and
Chelsea Reischuck's 10.
Allegra Johnson finished with game-high four blocks (three assisted).
Four Hawks ended the match with seven kills or more, led by Botsford's nine.
Shannon Memminger assisted 37 times to pace the offense.
Hilbert was in control early on, winning the first two sets (25-17, 25-12). After the Spartans called a time-out late in the third set, trailing 20-18, Hilbert returned to the floor and pretty much gave the game away with a service error, three straight hitting errors and another service error. They found themselves down 21-23 and called a quick timeout. D'Youville rode their momentum to a 25-22 win and moved to the other side of the net for the final set.
Hilbert relied on the combinations of Johnson, Memminger to Botsford early in the fourth and then they closed it with
Chelsea Adamski, Memminger to Reischuck for the kills. The Hawks ended the day on a 25-17 set score.
Up next for Hilbert is a four match weekend at the Blue Devils Tournament hosted by Fredonia State, October 4th and 5th. The Hawks square off against the hosts (4pm) before their rematch with La Roche at 6pm. Saturday, Hilbert is scheduled to play Westminster 11 am and a rematch against RIT at 1pm.
A schedule note: the AMCC league match against Penn State Behrend has been rescheduled to October 9th.
