FREDONIA, N.Y. — Hilbert College Softball hit the road on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader against Fredonia at Blue Devil Field. After dropping the opener 11–0, the Hawks bounced back in game two with a strong pitching performance and timely offense to secure a 4–1 victory and earn the split.
Game One: Fredonia 11 – Hilbert 0
Fredonia set the tone early in the opener, striking for three runs in the first inning and adding three more in the second to seize quick control. The Blue Devils continued to apply pressure in the third with a four‑run frame, capitalizing on baserunners and extra‑base hits to build a commanding lead.
Hilbert was limited offensively throughout the contest, managing just one hit while facing a steady outing from Kendall Phillips in the circle.
Ava Higgins recorded the lone hit for the Hawks, while
Grace Schwarzkopf and
Vanessa Koenig each worked walks in an effort to generate traffic.
Kimberly Bentley started for Hilbert, with
Kailey Stolowski providing relief as the Hawks worked to slow Fredonia's offensive rhythm through the later innings.
Game Two: Hilbert 4 – Fredonia 1
Hilbert responded with its best inning of the day in the nightcap, scoring all four runs in the second inning. After
Shelby Schimek singled and reached base safely, the Hawks took advantage of defensive miscues and disciplined plate appearances.
Madison Esmond drew a bases‑loaded walk to open the scoring, followed by an RBI groundout from
Emma Gionta.
Grace Schwarzkopf then delivered the decisive blow, reaching on an error that allowed two more runs to cross the plate.
From there, Hilbert's pitching staff took control.
Stephanie Mirras worked 4.1 effective innings, allowing just one run, an unearned tally in the fifth, to earn her first win of the season. Fredonia attempted to rally with baserunners in the middle innings, but Mirras consistently limited damage with timely strikeouts and ground balls.
Alana Yadov closed the game in relief, retiring the Blue Devils over the final 2.2 innings and earning the save.
Schimek finished with a hit and scored a run, while
Brenna Mulvaney and
Vanessa Koenig each added base hits during the victory.
