PITTSBURGH, PA – Hilbert College Baseball opened its season with a non-conference doubleheader on the road against Chatham this afternoon.
Chatham claimed the opener with a 5–4 walk‑off victory before taking game two by an 11–3 margin.
Game One: Hilbert 4 – Chatham 5
In the top of the first, the Hawks strung together three straight hits as
Harley Hoag and
Patrick Evans reached ahead of a run‑scoring double by
Reed Lesmeister, followed by an RBI single from
Jude Khoury to make it 2–0. The Cougars pulled one back in the bottom of the frame to make it 2-1.
Chatham tied the game in the fourth and later took a 3–2 lead in the fifth, but Hilbert regained control in the sixth. A leadoff walk and an
Alex Ellison double set the table, and a sacrifice groundout followed by a
Joey Haynes sac fly pushed the Hawks back in front, 4–3.
The game came down to the final frame, where Chatham rallied for two runs on a two‑run double to hand Hilbert a narrow 5–4 defeat.
Lesmeister led the offense with a 2‑for‑2 performance including a double, RBI, and two walks. Hoag, Haynes, Evans, and Khoury each added hits as the Hawks totaled 10 knocks in the opener.
Andrew Johnson worked 4.2 innings with four strikeouts, while
Ryan Hilton finished the final innings in relief.
Game Two: Hilbert 3 – Chatham 11
Hilbert again struck early in game two. Haynes doubled to begin the contest, and Hoag immediately followed with an RBI triple. Two batters later, Khoury drove Hoag home to secure a 2–0 first‑inning lead.
Chatham answered with a three‑run first, then broke the game open in the fourth with a four‑run inning, turning a tied contest into a 6–3 deficit. The Cougars added three more in the fifth and two in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Hoag led the Hawks with a 3‑hit performance, while Khoury recorded two more hits and an RBI. Haynes,
John Watson,
Aiden Hamilton, and
Garrett Brink each added hits as Hilbert registered 10 for the second straight game. On the mound,
Gregory Lowry,
Ronald Mort,
Johnray Hasfurter,
Tyler Noel,
Joey Haynes, and
David Alessi all saw action throughout the nine‑inning contest.
