HAMBURG, N.Y– Hilbert College Men's Soccer made history on Wednesday night, defeating Keuka College 6–1 at home for the program's first-ever victory over the Wolves after dropping the previous 11 matchups in the all-time series.
The Hawks wasted no time setting the tone, striking just two minutes into the contest. Senior midfielder
Carter Burke slipped a pass to
Jason Vullo in behind the Keuka defense, who buried the opening goal for a 1–0 lead. Burke continued his playmaking brilliance in the 26th minute, finding defender
Cam Murdie on a corner kick for Hilbert's second tally. That assist, the 19th of Burke's career, set a new program assist record, passing Hall of Famer Jacob Opala '04.
After Keuka converted a penalty kick to cut the deficit to 2–1, the Hawks answered back before halftime. Murdie once again rose above the defenders and headed in a set-piece assisted by Burke, for his second of the game in the 38th minute. The second Burke to Murdie connection of the afternoon restored a two-goal cushion at the break.
Hilbert carried its momentum into the second half as
Ryan Michelsen extended the lead in the 56th minute off a feed from Vullo, who finished the game with a goal and an assist. The Hawks added another in the 73rd minute on
Vincent Nkurunziza's first collegiate goal on a thunderous volley assisted by
Hamso Dagane. Burke and Murdie swapped roles for the game's final tally, as the junior defender found Burke on the back post all alone in the 76th minute. The strike gave Burke a goal and three assists on the day, while Murdie added the assist to his two-goal performance.
The Hawks outshot Keuka 22–14 and forced Wolves' goalkeeper Logan Karn into nine saves. Hilbert's goalkeeper
Daniel Downes was solid all match, notching seven saves in his third win of the campaign.
