Baseball Falls to Pitt-Greensburg in Elimination Game at AMCC Tournament

JOHNSTOWN, PA – Hilbert College Baseball took on Pitt-Greensburg this evening in an elimination game at the AMCC Double Elimination Tournament.

Despite an early 4-0 lead, and a one-run advantage heading into the ninth inning, the Hawks suffered a heartbreaking 8-7 walk-off defeat to the Bobcats to fall out of the postseason tournament and end the Hilbert campaign.

How it Happened
  • The Hawks jumped out to a perfect start to this one as a four-spot in the top of the first, paired with a scoreless home half of the inning saw the royal and white up 4-0 after one inning of play.
  • Harley Hoag (single) and Patrick Evans (sacrifice fly) each recorded an RBI in the frame, while Jack Duffek took advantage of a wild pitch to score, before Hoag wrapped up the scoring in the inning with a steal of home.
  • The teams traded zeroes in the second, before the Bobcats answered the Hilbert first inning with the game's next three runs. Pitt Greensburg used an RBI single in the third to get on the board, before adding a pair in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one-run game.
  • Patrick Evans recorded his second RBI of the contest in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 5-3, but the Bobcats answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame to once again cut the Hilbert lead to one.
  • Following a scoreless sixth, Greensburg brought home a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to take its first lead of the game at 6-5.
  • However, the lead would be short-lived as an error and a Joey Haynes RBI in the top of the eighth regained the lead for the Hawks late in this elimination game.
  • Ryan Hilton made quick work of the Bobcats in the bottom of the frame to send the game into the ninth, where the Hawks would take a 7-6 into the home half of the inning needing just three outs to advance.
  • Greensburg used a single and a double to knot the game at seven all, before a single up the middle brought home the runner on second and ended the Hilbert season with an 8-7 defeat.

By the Numbers
  •  Patrick Evans and Harley Hoag each recorded three hits in the contest, while Evans led the way with a pair of RBI.
  • Hoag and Haynes (2-5) each drove in a runner, while Hoag (three), Haynes, Kyle Borrello, Duffek, and Patrick Evans all scored in the game.
  • Tyler Noel (3.1 IP, 3 ER, 2 K) made the start on the mound for the Hawks, while Alex Rumfola (3 IP, 3 ER, 1 K) and Hilton (2 IP, 2 ER, 3 K) each tossed multiple innings in relief.
All-Tournament Team
  • Patrick Evans and Dustin Hendrix were each named to the All-Tournament Team following their impressive showings at the plate this week in Johnstown.
  • Evans hit a red-hot 7-10 (.700) with seven RBI, three runs scored, a pair of doubles, and a home run over the three-game postseason.
  • Hendrix went 5-13 (.385) at the dish with four runs scored and three doubles to earn the All-Conference nod.
Season Recap
  • Following the loss, the Hawks end the season 19-19, one win shy of three-consecutive 20-win campaigns.
  • The 7-7 conference mark was good enough for a fifth straight postseason appearance dating back to the 2021 season.
  • Three Hawks (Joey Haynes, Dylan Moorhouse, and Joe Reitebach) earned AMCC player of the week honors, while Dustin Hendrix and Tyler Noel were each placed on a D3baseball.com team of the week.
