Baseball Splits with Allegheny College

MEADVILLE, PA – Hilbert College Baseball traveled to Pennsylvania this afternoon for a doubleheader against the Allegheny College Gators. Hilbert took a 3-1 victory in a low-scoring game one before a late comeback by the Gators in game two split the twin bill.

Nolan Evans and Joe Reitebach split the mound and combined to shut down the Allegheny offense in game one as the duo allowed just one run over seven innings. Alex Ellison recorded a pair of hits, while Dustin Hendrix and Logan Hoyt each brought home a runner as three Hilbert runs would be enough for the game one victory.

Harley Hoag blasted a grand slam to tie up game two, and Patrick Evans went 3-3 at the plate, but Allegheny College used three sixth inning runs to earn a nightcap win to split the doubleheader.

Game One: Hilbert 3 – Allegheny College 1
Game Two: Hilbert 6 – Allegheny College 8

Game One:
  • Despite five total hits in the first three innings, neither side was able to bring a runner across the plate as the score remained 0-0 heading into the fourth inning.
  • The Hawks finally broke through in the top of the fourth with three runs, as Logan Hoyt scored Ellison on a groundout, Dustin Hendrix walked with the bases loaded, and the Gators gifted Hilbert a run on an error to make it 3-0. A wild pitch would get Allegheny on the board in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 3-1.
  • Nolan Evans wrapped up his outing after four innings, allowing just one run, while striking out four, before Reitebach (3 IP, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 SO) closed out the final three innings to earn his first save with the Hawks.
Hilbert worked nine walks in the contest as Joey Haynes (two), Harley Hoag (three), and Dustin Hendrix (two) each earned multiple free passes at the top of the order.

The Hawks were outhit 9-4 in the game, but the duo of Evans and Reitebach stranded twelve Gators on base.

Game Two:
  • The game's first four runs all belonged to the Gators as a three-run effort in the first, followed by a run in the third allowed the hosts to take an early 4-0 advantage.
  • After going scoreless in the first three frames, the Hilbert offense woke up in the top of the fourth with five runs to take the lead. Hoag's first career home run knotted the game at four, before Hendrix singled to score Nolan Evans and give the Hawks a 5-4 lead.
  • Reed Lesmeister's RBI single in the top of the fifth double the advantage, but the Gators responded with a run of their own in the home half of the frame to make it a one-run game.
  • A three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth, paired with scoreless sixth and seventh innings for Hilbert ended the contest with an 8-6 Gator victory.
Dylan Moorhouse started the game for the Hawks and went five innings allowing five earned runs while striking out seven.

Hoag, Nolan Evans, Hendrix, Patrick Evans, and Lesmeister each reached base multiple times in the game.
