KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Hilbert College Women's Lacrosse continued their seven-year rivalry against Keuka College today, and for the first time since the 2017 season, the Hawks kept the Wolves under 14 goals.
17 Hawks saw action in the 13-3 loss which will pay off down the road when Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play begins.
Olivia Cleary recorded 16 saves which included three saves off free position shots, and
Madison Matuszak netted her first collegiate goal in the second quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Cleary made four saves in the first five minutes of the opening quarter, Hilbert fell behind by two quick hits at 7:18. The Hawks struggled to get their transition game going and gave up the third goal in a row off a failed clear with 20-seconds left in the opening quarter.
Gabby Calandra forced a Keuka turnover, scooped the ball off the turf and attempted Hilbert's first shot in the game early in the second quarter. On Hilbert's next possession,
Jessee Jonathan was awarded the Hawks first free position shot. Hilbert outworked Keuka and attempted back-to-back shots after recording three consecutive ground balls. Hilbert continued to push on offense, and Jonathan took a Calandra-feed to the back of the net which set the 4-1 margin. The Wolves scored another two quick goals before Matuszak trimmed the difference (6-2) at the four-minute mark.
Keuka tallied seven unanswered hits which wrapped around the end of the second quarter into the middle of the fourth quarter. With 65-seconds remaining,
Olivia Horn finished the pass from
Ellie Pembleton for the final goal in the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
Jonathan paced the Hawks with five shots, and two draw controls, while
Samantha Accurso led with three ground balls and added two caused turnovers as well as two draw controls. Matuszak earned team-high honors with three caused turnovers.
