Softball Scores 14-9 Come-From-Behind Win At End of Spring Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Softball concluded their week-long spring training games today with another split decision.

The Hawks fell to Sweet Briar College in six innings then took an exciting come-from-behind win from Penn State Mont Alto.

Game One: Sweet Briar 8 – Hilbert 0, 6 inn
Game Two: Hilbert 14 – Penn State Mont Alto 9

NOTE WORTHY
  • The 14-run game marks the highest offensive push in the softball program since the 2018 season.
  • Kailey Stolowski took the morning loss before closing the nightcap for the win.  The sophomore pitcher tossed seven innings, struck out four while allowing two runs off 10 hits.
  • Samantha Heppel paced the Hawks with four hits, which included three doubles today. 
  • Emily Lacki led with three RBIs and Heppel and Emma Gionta each scored three runs.
GAME ONE
  • Sweet Briar pulled away in the morning game after they manufactured five runs in the top of the 2nd and then added three more runs, one in the 4th, 5th and 6th.
  • The Hawks earned four hits, one in each of the first four innings.
  • Heppel was the closest to home after she poked her double in the fourth inning.
Kailey Stolowski allowed eight hits, two earned runs, walked three and struck out one through five innings. Kimberly Bentley faced six batters in the final inning and gave up one hit which led the winning run in the game.

GAME TWO

The final game of the classic was an exciting one!  The Hawks dug themselves out of a 7-2 hole through the 4th and exploded with 12 runs over the final three innings for the 14-9 win.
Heppel went three innings and allowed five earned runs off nine hits.  Bentley covered the fourth and fifth innings and limited the Lions to four hits with out an earned run with one strike out.  She handed the ball to Stolowski who closed the game with strong pace and accuracy.  She struck out three, faced nine batters while allowing two hits.
  • Emma Gionta's infield single lead to a three-bag sprint off Kailey Stolowski's at bat in the 2nd inning.
  • The Hawks tightened the score in the 4th inning after Heppel advance from 1st to third off a pair of advancing hits and then scored after Grace Schwarzkopf's at bat.  
  • The Lions stacked four hits into four runs in the 4th which stretched their lead to 7-2 but Heppel's first double of the night cap plated Madison Esmond and Kaitlin Stolowski.
  • Mont Alto tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the 5th yet the Hawks weren't finished.  Kailey Stolowski whacked a double which scored Gionta.  Kaitlin Stolowski singled up the middle to score Kailey and Schwarzkopf pulling within one run.
  • Kailey entered in the 6th, had bases loaded with two outs, and after a high pitch got away from Gionta behind the plate, she recovered and tossed the ball to Stolowski who tagged the runner out at home to end the inning.
  • The Hawks weren't done yet.  Heppel doubled down the left field line, Stoliz singled to center field and Gonta's single scored Heppel to knot the game at 9-each.
  • With one out, Hilbert loaded the bases again. Esmond's single to center gave the Hawks the lead, another walk by Hilbert and then a Lacki's 2 RBI single added three more;  Yadov's ground-out plated the final run of the game, and after Kailey put down four Lions, the Hawks won.
Gionta went 3-for-4 and scored three runs while Heppel poked a pair of doubles, scored three runs off three hits with two RBIs, and Kaitlin Stolowski led with three RBIs while scoring two runs.
Lacki and Jazlyn Soliz were credited with stolen bases during the 12-run Hilbert push.

The Hawks have a few weeks off before they will host their Home Opener against Houghton University March 25th
