MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Hilbert College Softball returned to action today after missing a full day of competition yesterday because of weather.
The Hawks swung their bats in the 6-5 victory over SUNY Morrisville but were unable to connect in the night cap falling 2-0.
Kailey Stolowski was all business in the opening game putting down the Mustangs first seven batters before she exited the game in the 5th inning with 11 strike outs while
Kimberly Bentley recorded her first win of season.
Alana Yadov went the distance and struck out nine in the night cap, but the Hawks were able to find only two hits through seven innings.
Game One: Hilbert 6 – SUNY Morrisville 5
Game Two: Penn College 2 – Hilbert 0
Records: Hilbert 3-2 | Morrisville 0-1 | Penn 4-3
GAME ONE
- Hilbert's 1-0 lead held through the bottom of the 3rd inning then Samantha Heppel's double scored Alana Yadov and Emily Lacki.
- Kaitlin Stolowski threw the only base runner attempting to steal second in the top of the 4th , and after the Mustangs had runners in scoring position, Kailey Stolowski's delivery from the circle preserved the 3-1 lead through to the 6th.
- With two on, Kimberly Bentley took the circle and forced a fielder's choice, out at home. But the Mustangs scored two on the next at bat to even the game at 3-all and added two more by the time the Hawks picked up their bats in the bottom of the 6th.
- Hilbert responded with a big bottom half. A pair of walks, plus a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Madison Esmond's single, and Emily Lacki's follow-up poke to left knotted the game. And with bases still loaded, Samantha Heppel's walk scored the winning run.
Heppel went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs while Esmond scored two runs.
GAME TWO
- Yadov kept the Wildcats off the board after fanning five of their first nine batters. But a walk by Penn turned into a one-run lead in the bottom of the 3rd.
- The Hawks kept it a 1-0 game after turning a double play to get out of the 4th inning and had their chance in the 5th with two runners on but they came up empty.
- Penn tacked another run on off two hits and quick baserunning in the 6th for the final score.
Yadov collected both hits for the Hawks who committed five errors in the game.
