Hawks Fall to Undefeated Panthers in Triple Overtime

HAMBURG, N.Y.  – Hilbert College Men's Basketball had several chances to upset undefeated Pitt-Bradford in AMCC action, but the Hawks couldn't contain the Panthers on the offensive glass as time expired in regulation, in the first over time as well as the second overtime.

Bradford continued to handle their conference opponents and improved to 11-0 after a 132-125 triple overtime victory over Hilbert.

Even though the game went into three extra five-minute periods, the Hawks recorded the most points in a single game tonight while playing in the program's second triple OT conference contest.

Seniors Quran Briggs, Shaheem Ellis and Austin Boies continue to make their marks in the men's basketball record books as they each established new personal highs this evening.

HIGHLIGHTS

Quran Briggs put the team on his shoulders at times as he tossed in his new career-high 34 points in almost 46 minutes of action.  He connected on 14-of-20 from the field, hit 6-of-9 from the foul line and dished six assists.

Shaheem Ellis continued to pace the team with confidence as he earned game-high honors for both teams with 11 assists, setting a new personal record, and just four off the single-game record.  Ellis added 26 points, hitting 10-of-11 at the foul line while grabbing six rebounds.

Austin Boies worked for five offensive rebounds (11 total) making the Hawks competitive on the glass while Larry Morse battled foul trouble all night yet still finished with 22 points (10-15 from the floor) and seven rebounds (5 offensive).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pitt-Bradford, who entered the game averaging 108 points per game, set the pace off the tip.
  • The Hawks were ready for their full court pressure heading into the game having designed creative press breaks which limited turnovers and allowed them to attack the rim on the offensive end.
  • Bradford built a 12-point lead nine minutes into the game and then stretched it to 16 with 8:25 left in the period.
  • Ronnie Lewis started a 12-0 Hilbert run which was capped off by Malachi Hartley's make from downtown to set the 35-31 score with just over five minutes on the game clock.  Ellis continued to push the tempo, and he scored five consecutive points to drawn even closer (37-36).  He then gave Hilbert a 40-39 advantage after hitting all three free throw attempts.
  • After Bradford scored in the paint, the Hawks turned the ball over on their next possession which ultimately led to a six-point swing as the Panthers drilled a 3-pointer while also being fouled in the act of shooting; then hit the And 1.
  • Hilbert trailed the Panthers 47-42 at the break and Bradford didn't lose a step after their 15-minute locker room chat.
  • Bradford's pressure picked right back up, and they built a 13-point lead multiple times before the Hawks got back in the game.
  • It took four minutes for Hilbert to chip at the score, which featured a pair of Nathan Moore 3-pointers and Jamarius Johnson's three-point play to set the 80-all score.
  • Both teams traded buckets and Larry Morse finished a pass in the paint for the 1-point lead which preceded Brigg's three-point play at 0:54 (91-89).
  • The Panthers recorded three offensive rebounds before tipping in he ball which sent the game into overtime.
  • Nathan Moore scored the first six Hilbert points (3-pointer and 3-consecutive free throws) before Briggs went 1-for-2 while Ellis made both free throws for the 104-102 lead (0:05).  The Panthers calmly hit both freebies with zero time on the clock, again sending the game into another five minute period.
  • The Hawks jumped out to a 7-point lead (111-104) midway through the second overtime session but turnovers and a few missed shots put Lewis at the line for two free throws.  He made both, gave Hilbert a 114-111 advantage, but the Panthers hit a 3-pointer with less than 10-seconds remaining.  The Hawks were unable to connect on their last attempt at the buzzer.
  • Bradford's Jeremy Rodriguez took OVER the game in the last period, scoring the Panthers' first 16 points (8-of-9 offensive possessions) while Hilbert scored on 50% of their possessions and fell in a 132-125 final.
GAME NOTES
  • The 125 points scored broke the Hawks' previous record set in 2006 when they scored 117 points in an overtime win over Mount Aloysius.
  • The only other time Hilbert Men's Basketball played in a triple overtime game was in 2011 when they beat Franciscan University 91-84.
  • A contributing factor to losing the game was at the foul line, where the Hawks made only 31-43 attempts while the Panthers hit 42-of-51.
  • Hilbert finished the game hitting 44-of-91 field goal attempts (48.4%) while the Panthers made 40-of-93 (43.0%).
  • Bradford owned the boards, cleaning the glass for 63 rebounds (28 offensive) to Hilbert's 50 (20 OR).
  • Bradford's bench outscored the Hawks' 68-20 while Hilbert outscored the visitor's 70-50 in the paint.
  • There were 67 total fouls called as four Bradford players were disqualified while only two Hawks exited early.
