HAMBURG, N.Y. — Hilbert Women's Hockey took on Buffalo State for a second straight day at the Nike Base this afternoon and like yesterday, the Bengals used a big first period to take control of the contest and eventually take down the Hawks.
Goalie
Jewely Monford once again battled in between the pipes for Hilbert, making 52 stops, including a perfect 27/27 second period. Offensively, the Hawks tested Buffalo State goalie Casey Horrigan 11 times, led by four shots from
Kelsey Fuller and three from
Victoria Battaglia.
The Bengals got off to a fast start this afternoon, finding the back of the net on three of their first five shots to open up a 3-0 advantage just over five minutes into the contest. Following the opening offensive surge, Hilbert settled into the matchup, thanks in large part to a stretch of 50-consecutive saves from Monford. Fuller (three),
Vanessa Koenig (two) and Battaglia (one) each fired shots in this span as the Hawks looked to get on the board.
After Hilbert did well to hold off the Bengals' offense for more than 30 minutes of game-time, the visitors exploded for four goals in the game's final ten minutes to round out the scoring in the 7-0 contest.
Hilbert blocked 25 shots in the game, led by seven from
Victoria Koenig and four each from
Vanessa Koenig and
Jamie Bower.
Sophia Perry added three blocked shots of her own and a shot on goal, while
Brooke Kwiecien recorded a blocked shot, a shot on goal, and eight faceoff wins. Battaglia recorded a game-high 18 wins in the dot on 36 total draws taken.
