Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Andrew Loveless

Women's Basketball Narrowly Taken Down by Carlow

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College Women's Basketball hosted Carlow this afternoon inside the Hafner Recreation Center for the final AMCC contest of 2025 for the Hawks. In a back-and-forth contest, Hilbert dropped to 1-2 in conference play with a 63-60 defeat to the Celtics.

Carlow opened the game strong, using a big first quarter to hold a 22-11 advantage after ten minutes of play.

However, the Hawks would respond early and throughout the second frame to cut the deficit before the break. Senior Jessee Jonathan, who was playing in her final game as a Hawk before graduation, set the tone early in the frame with a hit from beyond the arc. Nyema Blair and Kayla Johnson each added three pointers of their own in the quarter as the Hawks trailed by nine halfway through the contest.

The Hawks came out of the break turning defense into offense and posting their best quarter of the afternoon. Hilbert held Carlow to just eight points in the third quarter while scoring 17 of their own, erasing the deficit and tying the game at 47–47 heading into the final period. Johnson added six points in the frame to lead the comeback effort for Hilbert.

The fourth quarter featured multiple lead changes as the teams traded stops and buckets. Hilbert grabbed its first lead of the afternoon with 6:49 to go and led by as many as four points, but Carlow found points at the line down the stretch to regain the lead and put the game away.

Hilbert was led by a balanced scoring effort, with Johnson pacing the Hawks with 14 points. Learsi Sabala added a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 17 rebounds (ten offensive), while Bianca Iten chipped in eight points off the bench.

In her final game in the royal and gold, Jonathan tallied five points, four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.

The Hawks won the battle on the glass, 49–41 and forced 23 turnovers.
