HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College Men's Soccer secured its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory of the young season this afternoon with a decisive 3-0 result over Carlow. In the win, sophomore goalkeeper
Daniel Downes set a new program shutout record, as his fourth-career clean sheet propelled him to the top spot on the all-time Hilbert list.
Downes, who finished with three saves on the day, anchored a defensive effort that limited the Celtics to just 10 total shots and three on goal. The record-breaking performance saw Downes break the deadlock with
Logan Peck '24.
Hilbert (4–3–1, 1–1–0 AMCC) controlled the match from the opening whistle, outshooting Carlow 23–10 and earning 10 corner kicks to the visitors' one.
The Hawks opened the scoring in the 20th minute when
Luciano Gallo brilliantly placed the ball in the side-netting from the edge of the 18-yard box to make it 1–0.
Carter Burke earned the assist on the player after laying the ball off to Gallo. After halftime, Burke doubled the lead in the 66th minute, heading in a perfect cross from
Jacob Korte to make it a 2-0 game.
Hilbert added insurance in the 78th minute when
Jason Vullo extended the lead to three goals with an impressive solo effort. The senior forward pressured the Carlow backline to win the ball, before firing a left-footed shot into the corner of the net. The Vullo tally would be the final goal of the game, as the Hawks held on to earn the 3-0 conference win.
Burke led the attack with five shots (two on target), one goal, and one assist, while Gallo and Vullo each found the net once.
