CANTON, N.Y. – Hilbert College Football fell to St. Lawrence this afternoon in the first ever meeting between the Hawks and the Saints. Hilbert totaled 235 yards on the ground and held the ball for longer than the hosting Saints (36:16 – 23:44), but the high-powered St. Lawrence passing offense made the difference in the 45-14 Hilbert Liberty League defeat.
The Saints (2–3, 1–1) struck early with a pair of long touchdown passes from quarterback Will Lederman, who finished 14-of-17 for 341 yards and four touchdowns. St. Lawrence led 31–7 at halftime after hitting a 49-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter.
Hilbert's breakthrough came late in the first half with a sustained, methodical drive. Quarterback
Darrion Montgomery guided the Hawks on an 11-play, 80-yard march, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by freshman
Joseph Edick. The drive featured steady contributions from
Mike Hanlon,
Christian Hamilton Jr., and Edick, as Hilbert's offensive line controlled the tempo in the trenches.
Montgomery added another Hilbert score in the fourth quarter, his first as a Hawk. The sophomore quarterback broke free for a 47-yard touchdown run to make it 45-14, which ultimately closed the scoring. Montgomery finished with 65 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries and also completed his lone pass attempt — a 25-yard completion to
Nicholas West.
Hanlon anchored the rushing attack with 20 carries for 79 yards (4.0 avg.), while Edick posted 42 yards and a touchdown on nine attempts. Hamilton contributed 26 yards, and
Franklin McFadden added a 15-yard run in his lone carry of the day.
Hilbert's defense was led by senior linebacker
Scotty Winchell, who recorded a game-high nine tackles, including half a sack.
Kooper Aiken tallied two tackles for loss, while
Clifford Zeigler registered a 10-yard sack.
