HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert Men's Soccer hosted Alfred University this afternoon in the Hawks' second home nonconference matchup of the season. After a scoreless first half, three second half goals for the Saxons handed Hilbert a second straight 3-0 defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening 45 minutes of the game saw a back-and-forth affair with both teams getting their share of chances. Hilbert had the game's first two shots as
Chris Smith and
Carter Burke each sent the ball wide of the net. Alfred followed these attempts up with a pair of shots on net, but
Daniel Downes made two stops to keep the game scoreless. Hilbert attempted four more shots in the half but were unable to put any on frame, while Downes continued his strong play making two more saves before the whistle blew.
After an early Downes save in the second half, Alfred was awarded a penalty kick due to a handball in the box. The Saxons buried from twelve yards out to open the floodgates as they would tally three goals in a twelve-minute span to build a quick 3-0 advantage. The trio of quick goals, paired with Hilbert recording just one shot in the second half, led to a 3-0 finish in favor of the visitors.
GAME NOTES
- Downes recorded eight saves in the contest.
- Chris Smith and Jason Vullo each attempted a pair of shots, with neither finding the target.
