PITTSBURGH, PA – Hilbert Women's Soccer began Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play this afternoon with a trip to Highmark Stadium to take on the Celtics from Carlow University. Despite Vanessa Van Slyke burying the team's first two goals of the season, the Hawks fell to 0-1 in the AMCC with a 4-2 loss.

The hosting Celtics found the back of the net first in this one on their third shot of the contest. After a pair of Keira McFarland saves inside the first ten minutes, the third Carlow shot broke the scoreless deadlock and gave Carlow a 1-0 advantage in the 12th minute.

It would not take long for the Hawks to respond however, as Van Slyke scored Hilbert's first goal of the season in the 17th minute to knot the game at one. Julia Fabiano's long ball found Chloe Champagne, who did well to find Van Slyke for a well-placed shot outside the 18 to make it a 1-1 game.

However, the next three goals of the game all belonged to Carlow, as a first half tally, as well as two second half markers made it a 4-1 game after 58 minutes had passed.
The Hawks were not done yet, as Van Slyke's second of the game off a rebound cut it to a 4-2 deficit with 30 minutes left to play.

Hilbert fired five more shots on net the rest of the way in search of two goals to even the score, but Carlow keeper Lyndsey Szekely was up to the task, keeping the ball out of the net the rest of the game for the 4-2 AMCC win for the hosts.

• Van Slyke fired a game-high four shots on goal to go along with her two-goal effort.

The Hawks head to Fredonia next Tuesday, October 1st looking for the team's first win in their final non-conference contest of the season. The 4 PM matchup between Hilbert and the Fredonia State Blue Devils will take place at University Stadium.
