Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Andrew Loveless

Men's Soccer Opens AMCC Play with 1-0 Victory Over Carlow

PITTSBURGH, PA – Hilbert Men's Soccer kicked off Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play this morning with an early morning trip to Highmark Stadium to take on the Celtics from Carlow University. For a second straight season, the Hawks are off to a 1-0 start in the AMCC after taking down Carlow.

Hilbert was led by Carter Burke (1 goal, 4 shots, 2 on target) and goalkeeper Daniel Downes (win, 5 saves, clean sheet) in an entertaining, back-and-forth 1-0 victory.

Carter Burke opened his account for the season in spectacular fashion with a free kick into the top left corner in the 14th minute to give the Hawks the early advantage. Burke was denied a second free kick strike by the crossbar just ten minutes later as Hilbert continued the attack looking to double the lead.

Jason Vullo, Cam Murdie, Jacob Donner and Burke each attempted shots on target before the halftime whistle blew, but the Carlow goalkeeper kept it a 1-0 game heading into the break.

The second half was all about Downes, as the Celtics kept the freshman keeper busy in his first conference action. His first stop of the game did not come until the 56th minute, but Downes was up to the task, keeping it a 1-0 game. Four more crucial stops were required from the Hilbert keeper, as he ended with five saves in his first career win and clean sheet.

GAME NOTES
  • The Hawks outshot Carlow 7-5 as Burke (2), Vullo (2), Donner, Murdie, and Chris Smith all sent shots on target in the contest.
  • All eleven Hilbert starters remained on the field the entire 90 minutes to earn the important AMCC win.
