HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert Men's Soccer welcome Bryant & Stratton Buffalo to Hawk field this afternoon for a non-conference tilt. The Hawks and Bobcats played an entertaining back-and-forth physical contest that saw each team score a pair of goals for a 2-2 draw.
Before the match, Hilbert honored seniors
Connor Dispense,
Ryan Michelsen,
Kameron Milton, and
John Schroth for their dedication to the program in their time in royal and white.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The action started early in this one, as a Bobcat yellow card and a pair of
Daniel Downes' saves occurred just five minutes in. Hilbert's first look on goal was a low, well-placed strike on a free kick by
Carter Burke that was pushed wide for a corner kick for the Hawks just over 15 minutes in. The next shot on net belonged to Bryant & Stratton, but the game's opening goal belonged to the Hawks.
Carter Burke broke free on the left side of the box after dribbling through a pair of defenders, before sliding the ball to a wide-open
Chris Smith on the back post for a 1-0 Hilbert advantage at the 20:56 mark. Hilbert looked to double the lead on a shot by
Cam Murdie, but a Bobcats' saved allowed the visitors to claim the next goal of the game less than six minutes after the Hawks took the lead.
However, the goals kept coming as
Jason Vullo's second of the year broke the deadlock once again to give Hilbert a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Murdie set up the Vullo strike with a beautiful back-heel pass at the top of the box.
Downes was called upon once more in the half, as his fourth save of the first half allowed the Hawks to head into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
The Hilbert lead would not last long into the second half as Bryant & Stratton found their second goal of the contest just five minutes into the half to tie the game at two all.
Despite Hilbert holding a 4-1 shots on goal advantage the rest of the way, including a penalty kick, the game would end without a winner as the teams split the goals in this one for a 2-2 draw.
