HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College Baseball hosted Allegheny College for the Hawks' senior day this afternoon. The team honored
Benjamin Ratajczak and
John Riviere-Vejas prior to the nonconference doubleheader against the Gators.
When the action kicked off, Allegheny racked up 22 runs on the day to sweep the Hawks with a 10-6 win in game one and a 12-6 victory in game two.
Game 1:
Allegheny College built a sizeable lead after two innings of play, posting three runs in the first and seven runs in the second to go up 10-0 early in game one.
Hilbert erased the zero from the home side of the scoreboard in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout from
Patrick Whelan.
Freshman pitcher
Jacob Kim-Kubiak gave the Hawks 3.2 scoreless innings as the offense worked to chip away at the lead of the Gators.
The Hawks added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 10-3 game. Whelan's second RBI of the game and a
Jairo Santos sacrifice fly put the runs on the board for Hilbert.
After
Matthew Whelan's scoreless seventh, the offense went to work in the bottom of the frame attempting to pull off an improbable comeback.
Jonny Black,
Ben Chowaniec, and
Griffin McAndrews recorded RBIs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 10-6, but the game would end that way as the Hawks ran out of outs.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Riviere-Vejas, and Jack Duffek each recorded a pair of hits to lead the Hawks, while Patrick Whelan provided Hilbert with two RBIs.
- Kim-Kubiak and Matthew Whelan pitched the final 4.2 innings of the game holding Allegheny off the board.
Game 2:
After falling behind early in game one, the Hawks were able to score twice in the first for a 2-1 lead after one inning. Allegheny got a run in the top of the frame, but an RBI double from
Jack Duffek and RBI single from
Dustin Hendrix gave the Hawks their first lead of the afternoon.
However, the next eight runs of the game would belong to the Gators as they built up another large lead in this doubleheader. Three runs in the third, four runs in the fourth, and a run in the top of the fifth made it 9-2 game.
Hilbert matched the Allegheny run in the fifth on Hendrix's second RBI single of the game to make it 9-3.
Like they did in the fifth, Hilbert matched the scoring output of the Gators in both the sixth and seventh innings as Allegheny took game two 12-6.
John Riviere-Vejas doubled to score
John Watson and then came home on fielder's interference in the sixth, and
Trent White singled to score
Derek Martinez who blasted a triple to the wall earlier in the inning in the seventh.

Next up for the Hawks is the first round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs at home on Friday. La Roche comes to campus for a best-of-three series beginning at 1 pm. The Hawks finished the AMCC season with a record of 10-6, good enough for third in the conference earning them the home game. The sixth-seeded Redhawks head into Hamburg for the first round after a 7-9 campaign. Hilbert won both contests vs La Roche earlier this season 5-3 and 6-3.
