Baseball Swept by Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Hilbert College Baseball went to Fredonia this afternoon for a nonconference test against the Blue Devils of the SUNYAC. With four runs in each game, the Hawks fell to 1-8 when scoring less than five runs after a Fredonia sweep.

Two Blue Devil home runs, and a 4.1 inning hitless outing from the Fredonia starter led to a 10-4 win for the home team in game one.

Hilbert struck first in game two, but an immediate answer provided Fredonia with a lead they would hang on to for a 5-4 game two victory.

Game 1:

The Blue Devils opened the scoring in game one with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. A two-run homer and an RBI single put three runs on the home side of the scoreboard.

Hilbert managed to cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the second despite not recording a hit in the frame. Jack Duffek walked to lead off the inning, and then came around to score on an error by the Blue Devils for the Hawks' first run of the game.

Fredonia took full control of the game with a five run fifth inning, while holding the Hawks hitless through five. The Blue Devils added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 10-1 game.

RBIs from Duffek, Billy LoBello, and Jairo Santos in the top of the seventh gave the Hawks three more runs, but the lead of Fredonia was too much for a Hilbert comeback as the Blue Devils took game one 10-4.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Santos had two of the five Hilbert hits in the contest to go along with an RBI.
  • Brennen Hediger and Johnray Hasfurter split the game on the mound for the Hawks with the duo each striking out one batter and combining to issue just one walk.
  • Patrick Whelan became the program's all-time leader in hit-by-pitches with an HBP in the fourth inning.

Game 2:

After a scoreless first inning, Hilbert opened the scoring in the top of the first. An RBI single from Griffin McAndrews scored Billy LoBello for the 1-0 lead.

However, three runs in the bottom of the first gave the Blue Devils an immediate answer and the lead after one inning.

Patrick Whelan's RBI single in the top of the third made it a one run game, but Fredonia had an answer in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single of their own to make it 4-2.

Hilbert tied the game in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. LoBello's RBI single, and an error that scored Whelan made it a 4-4 game.

Fredonia yet again had an answer to the Hilbert runs with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead and make it a 5-4 game.

Despite Jairo Santos standing on third base in the seventh inning, the Hawks went scoreless in the final two innings to fall 5-4 in game two.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Santos and Whelan each recorded multiple hits for the Hawks.
  • Andrew Cole started for Hilbert, going 3.2 innings allowing an earned run.
  • Alex Rumfola threw a scoreless sixth inning, striking out two batters.
Up Next:

Hilbert will head to Alfred on Thursday, April 25th for an AMCC doubleheader. The Hawks' final regular season road trip of the season is scheduled to begin at 1 pm at Pioneer Stadium.
