Softball Suffers a Pair of Nonconference Setbacks

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Hilbert College Softball traveled to Houghton this evening to take on the Highlanders in a nonconference doubleheader. The Hawks could not contain the Houghton offense, who scored in eight of their eleven offensive innings, in a two-game sweep for the Highlanders.

Hilbert scored three first inning runs in game one, but constant offense from Houghton led to 15 hits and a 13-6 final.

After Hilbert once again got on the board first in game two, the Highlanders scored ten straight runs to take game two 10-2.

Game 1:

The Hilbert offense came out hot, scoring three runs in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Emily Lacki's RBI double, and Victoria Hanley and Alana Yadov's RBIs provided the early scoring for the Hawks.

Houghton had an answer to these runs, with three of their own to tie the game in the bottom of the first.

Hilbert added a run in the top of the second when Brooke Feliciano came around to score on an error after leading off the inning with a single.

The lead once again did not last long as the Highlanders matched their three-run first inning with three more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-4 lead.

Emma Gionta's RBI groundout, and Lacki's second RBI of the contest evened the score at six all in the top of the fourth.

With a five-run effort in the bottom of the fourth, and two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, Houghton scored the game's final seven runs for the 13-6 game one victory.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Lacki was the only Hawk to record multiple hits and RBIs, with two each in a 2-4 effort.
  • Kailey Stolowski started the game in the circle, pitching three innings with four strikeouts.
  • Gina Salerno and Kimberly Bentley combined to finish the game in the circle with Salerno allowing two earned runs in two innings of work, and Bentley throwing a scoreless sixth inning.

Game 2:

After Kaitlin Stolowski led the top of the first off with a single, Emily Lacki's first career home run gave Hilbert a 2-0 lead after the first half inning.

The Highlanders cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, before scoring four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead.

Hilbert pitcher Samantha Heppel slowed down the Houghton offense with a scoreless third inning, but three runs in the fourth, and two runs in the fifth for the Highlanders led to an early conclusion of this one with the hosts up 10-2.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Lacki's first career home run gave her two more RBIs on the day, and the only two Hilbert RBIs of the game.
  • Kaitlin Stolowski had a pair of hits, and Marissa Czombel and Leandra Cruz each recorded a hit in the contest.
  • Heppel pitched the whole game for the Hawks recording three strikeouts.
Up Next:

The Hawks will have a quick turnaround when Pitt Bradford comes to campus on Wednesday. Hilbert (10-8, 5-3) will look to keep the four-game conference winning streak alive when the team goes for their first win over the Panthers since 2018.
