BUFFALO, N.Y. – Hilbert College Softball hosted Carlow University this afternoon at in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader. With a sweep of the Celtics, the Hawks improved to 5-3 in the conference, good for second place.
Carlow grabbed the first run of the game, but five straight Hilbert runs led to a 6-3 game one victory.
After not getting on the board until the fifth inning, the Hawks scored six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take game two 6-5 and complete the sweep.
Game 1:
Carlow quickly loaded the bases in the top of the first on a single and a pair of walks. Hilbert pitcher
Kailey Stolowski was able to limit the damage to just one run after a fielder's choice and a strikeout to end the inning.
The Hawks had an answer to the Carlow run, with three of their own in the bottom of the first. An RBI fielder's choice from
Emily Lacki, RBI single from
Alana Yadov, and a sacrifice fly from
Mackenzie Catan made it a 3-1 game.
After a scoreless second inning, Hilbert extended the lead to 5-1 in the third.
Victoria Hanley led off the inning with a triple, and Yadov brought her home with a double for her second RBI of the game. An error after a single from
Samantha Heppel gave the Hawks their second run of the frame.
The Celtics looked to make things interesting with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead of the Hawks in half and make it a 5-3 game. However, Stolowski shut down the Carlow offense the rest of the way to deny a comeback.
Hanley added an insurance run in the sixth as her third hit of the game scored
Kaitlin Stolowski to make it 6-3, which is how the game would end.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Big days at the plate from Hanley (3-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB), and Yadov (2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) powered the Hilbert offense.
- Kailey Stolowski went the distance in the circle for the Hawks, earning her seventh win of the season.
Game 2:
Like game one, Carlow opened the scoring in game two in the top of the first. A single with the bases loaded brought home a pair of Celtics to give the visitors an early 2-0 advantage.
The next run of the contest did not come until the fourth inning when Carlow added a run to their lead. An RBI single to left field made it a 3-0 game.
Hilbert got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut into the Carlow lead.
Emma Gionta scored on an error after leading off the inning with a double to get the Hawks on the board.
Victoria Hanley's second RBI of the day scored
Makenna Smith to make it 3-2 after five innings.
After pitcher
Samantha Heppel held the Celtics scoreless in the top of the sixth, the offense of Hilbert came alive in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. RBI singles from Smith and
Emily Lacki, and a two-run error put four runs on the board in the frame to give the Hawks a 6-3 lead heading into the final inning.
After the Celtics scored a pair of runs to cut the lead to one in the top of the seventh,
Kailey Stolowski stepped back in the circle looking to add a save to the win she already earned in game one. With the bases loaded and one out, the freshman pitcher needed just one pitch to end the game and give the Hawks their second straight sweep and fourth consecutive victory.
