HAMBURG, N.Y. – Jason Sage's late-game goal forced overtime, but the Hilbert College men's lacrosse team suffered a 7-6 overtime loss to Thiel College this afternoon at St. Francis High School.
The Hawks maintained control on the scoreboard until the Tomcats knotted the game at 5-5 just seconds into the fourth quarter. Thiel then took a 6-5 lead at 13:17 but Hilbert did not quit.
The Hawks unleashed six shots before Sage's one-on-one look at the frame beat the Tomcats goalie with just 14 seconds remaining in regulation. Hilbert won the ensuing faceoff and Matthew Kennedy's shot was blocked before time expired.
Taivaughn Roach won the overtime period's faceoff but a Hilbert turnover allowed Thiel to march down the field, call a time out and get organized. Just thirteen seconds after play resumed, the Tomcats attacked the net and snuck one low past Griffin Miller for the win.
Griffin Miller recorded 16 saves in 60:39 minutes while Matthew Kenndey earned four points off three goals and an assist.
Joseph Gorman led with two caused turnovers, six ground balls while Landin Piniewski added five ground balls.
Mason Shehadi's pass set up Kennedy with the game's first man-up goal six minutes into the game. Kennedy then assisted on Kristopher Newman's hit at 4:19 and Joey DiMaria finished the three-goal run by the Hawks with less than three minutes to go in the first period. Thiel evened the score (3-3) by the start of the second quarter.
Kennedy scored back-to-back goals, the second a man-up, thanks to DiMaria's pass, lifting the Hawks by a two-goal margin again. Yet Thiel took their first lead (6-5) after stringing together three consecutive scores.
Hilbert (0-2) hits the road for their first away game this Wednesday when they face SUNY Poly on March 13th at 6pm in Utica, NY.
