HAMBURG, N.Y. –
Hilbert College Men's Lacrosse dropped a close game this afternoon as they hosted the Bryn Athyn Lions. A 7-2 advantage in the second half allowed the visitors to take this one 9-7.
The game's first three goals belonged to the Hawks, as
Matthew Kennedy,
Joey DiMaria, and
Aidan Franko opened the scoring giving Hilbert a 3-0 advantage a little over five minutes into the contest.
The Lions were able to cut the lead to one with a pair of quick goals, but Hilbert responded with goals from
Kristopher Newman and
Jason Sage to restore the three-goal lead as the first quarter ended.
After the teams combined for seven goals in the first quarter, the defenses tightened up, with neither team finding the back of the net in the second quarter to send the game to halftime with the Hawks leading 5-2.
The Lions grabbed the first four goals out of the break to take their first lead of the game at 6-5 with 2:47 to go in the third quarter. Franko's second of the game knotted the score at six, but a Bryn Athyn strike off the ensuing faceoff sent the game into the fourth quarter with the Lions up 7-6.
Newman buried his second of the game on a man up opportunity after the Hawks worked the ball around the horn to tie the game at seven.
Bryn Athyn took the lead once again, this time with 7:12 remaining in the contest. After the Hawks had a few good looks to tie the game, the Lions doubled their lead with under a minute remaining and wasted out the clock after winning the game's final faceoff.
