Volleyball Earns AMCC Win In Sweep of Wells

AURORA, N.Y.  –  Hilbert Men's Volleyball extended its Wells win streak to four after the Hawks captured a 3-1 victory over Wells College tonight inside the Schwartz Athletic Center.

Hilbert picked up their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win after beating the Express, and they swept Wells this year after earning an early January, non-conference win in Albany.

Hilbert manufactured their most successful night at the net, recording 54 kills while earning 66 points, the most this year.  The Hawks added eight blocks, four service aces and 75 digs.

Brad Converse and Connor Higgins each notched a double double with Converse leading with 19 kills (11 digs) while Higgins kept play alive with 14 digs (10 kills) in addition to collecting a game-high four solo blocks.

Tyler Hassell added 11 kills and eight digs and Michael Pozzuto chipped in a team-best 17 digs.  Austin Chandler finished with 42 assists and two service aces.
  • Hilbert and Wells traded side outs early in the opening set before the Hawks slowly pulled away.   After trailing by two points multiple times, the Hawks opened up the scoring and built a 12-8, then 16-12 before jumping out to a 21-15 lead., forcing an Express timeout.  Brad Converse recorded Hilbert's final two points of the 25-21 win.
  • The Hawks looked in control in the second set, maintaining the lead on the scoreboard through a 10-7 score.  The Express stacked six points together to jump on top, 13-11 and they never looked back.  Hilbert had to play catch-up but lost their momentum, falling 25-17 in the second set.
  • Hilbert regrouped in the third set, opening up a ten-point lead, 19-9 before Wells caught fire.  The Hawks recorded 18 points off kills, led by Converse who finished with nine in the set, yet the Express made it an interesting finish, slicing the margin to four points, 25-21.
  • The Hawks took over in the fourth set, using four consecutive kills by Tyler Hassell and Connor Higgins to build a 6-1 lead and the set's first timeout.  A few more kills added points for the Hawks before the service error bug caught both programs by surprise.  Hilbert held a 17-9 advantage but the Express shifted into gear with a 6-1 rally, pulling within three points.  Hilbert put the match away posting five kills heading into the 25-20 win.
Brad Converse, after posting 21.5 points tonight, move into third place in the Men's Volleyball All-Time list (737 pts), now chasing assistant coach Korey Schwab who is No. 2 with 1007.5 points.

Hilbert (5-10, 1-1 AMCC) returns to action with an away game at Hiram College this Saturday, March 2nd before they get a week-long break from competition.
