Volleyball Battle The Bearcats in AMCC Action

HAMBURG, N.Y. - Hilbert College Men's Volleyball opened the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule today with a home match against Saint Vincent College who came with a 7-6 overall record.

Brad Converse had a monster day recording 14 points off 12 kills and two service aces.  Austin Chandler led with three aces, and nine digs while dishing for 25 assists, and Tyler Hassell added seven kills and one block solo.

The Bearcats took the opening two sets, before the Hawks used the energy from the fans in the stands to pull out the third set win.  Saint Vincent put the match away with their strongest hitting percentage in the fourth set for the 25-13-, 25-18, 19-25, 25-15 AMCC win.

The Hawks were fueled in the third set with .261 attack percentage and collected their most kills in a set (10) in the fourth.
  • Hilbert and Saint Vincent traded points early in the opening set but with the score 13-10, the Bearcats stacked five points together and built an 18-10 lead.  They used another five-point run to pull away with the win.
  • The Hawks looked in control at the start of the second set using a 5-0 run punctuated by a Chandler service ace.  The Bearcats inched back then used three services aces in 5-point run to go up 10-7.  Hilbert was able to knot the score at 14-all, thanks to miscues by SVC, but another late-set rally by the guests gave them the 25-18 victory.
  • The Hawks benefited from a vocal fan base in the third set who really got excited by the play of Drew O'Neill who recorded three powerful kills down the stretch. Converse led the charge with five kills and three services aces in the 25-19 set win.
  • Hilbert ran out of gas in the fourth set, falling behind 20-11 prior to committing three attack errors that set the score at 24-14.
