Baseball Opens Season With Sweep of Keuka

HAMBURG, N.Y.   – Hilbert College Baseball opened their season with a nonconference doubleheader sweep over the Keuka College Wolves today.

The offense of the Hawks got out to a hot start in the first two contests of the season, scoring 18 total runs in their 7-3 and 11-2 victories this afternoon.

Hilbert combined 14 hits with 19 free passes to first base (14 BBs, 5 HBPs) to get on the board early and often in each game

Game 1:

After a 1-2-3 first inning from Dylan Moorhouse, who had a fantastic debut on the bump for the Hawks (W, 5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 7 Ks), Hilbert grabbed three runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a bases-clearing double from Konner Hauck in his first collegiate at bat. Keuka pulled a run back in the top of the third, but four runs in the bottom half of the frame on a combination of bases-loaded walks and hit-by-pitches from Griffin McAndrews, Alex Ellison, Jairo Santos, and Nolan Evans extended the Hilbert lead to 7-1. The Wolves would score twice more in the contest, but it would not be enough as the Hawks took game one 7-3.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Hauck had a big debut for Hilbert, going 2-3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored.
  • Brennen Hediger pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing just one hit, and no runs, while striking out a pair of Keuka batters.
Game 2:

The offense carried over into game two, as Patrick Whelan launched his 14th career homerun over the wall in left-center to give Hilbert a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Evans scored on the homer after singling to left field. The Hawks quickly loaded the bases in the second inning on a walk from McAndrews and singles by Ben Chowaniec and Ellison. This would ignite a big inning from the hosts as Hilbert would score six runs from an error, a Hauck single, a balk, a Dustin Hendrix 2 RBI single, and a single from McAndrews. The score would stay at 8-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Chowaniec would score on a fielder's choice. After the Wolves removed the 0 from the board with a run in the top of the sixth, Chowaniec singled to score a pair of Hawks to bring the 10th and 11th runs of the game across the plate. Keuka scored in the top half of the seventh to complete the 11-2 final score.

BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Spencer Harford made the start in his first action for the Hawks. The junior transfer from ECC earned the win after going 5.0 innings, with 4 hits, 0 earned runs, while striking out five Wolves.
  • Alex Ellison went 3-3 at the plate, with one run scored, while Ben Chowaniec went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.
  • Freshman Dustin Hendrix recorded the first hit of his collegiate career, going 1-3 in the contest with 2 RBIs and a run scored.
Up Next:

The Hawks will be in South Carolina their next time out as the team heads to Myrtle Beach for spring break. Hilbert will be playing in the Ripken Experience from March 2nd - 9th, as the team is scheduled to play nine games down south.
