Hawks Outlast Mounties on Senior Day

HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert Men's Basketball closed out its' season with an entertaining 80-77 victory over Mount Aloysius this afternoon.

Prior to the start of the contest, the Hawks recognized seniors Edward Perez and Jahmel Demery for their contributions as student athletes to the men's basketball program.

HIGHLIGHTS

Quran Briggs carried much of the offensive load for Hilbert in this one, providing the Hawks with an efficient 26 points. The Junior guard connected on 8 of his 12 attempts from the floor, while making a season-high 10 free throws on 14 attempts.

Kyreese Fisher and Edward Perez joined Briggs in double-digits this afternoon, with 13 and 10 points respectively. Fisher's 13 points marked a career high for the Junior guard. He also set new bests in field goals made (4) and free throws made (5).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Mounties claimed the first five points of the contest to jump out to an early 5-0 lead but 16 of the next 18 points belonged to the Hawks to give the hosts an early nine-point advantage with the score 16-7.
  • Hilbert worked to maintain this lead, fighting off multiple runs from Mount Aloysius throughout the first half. While the Hawks never squandered the lead, they did see the advantage cut to just two points as the teams went into their locker rooms with the score reading 38-36 in favor of the hosts.
  • The second half saw a lot of back-and-forth action, with three ties and two lead changes before the ten-minute mark.
  • Consecutive buckets from Perez, Fisher, and Briggs gave the Hawks some breathing room with 8:21 remaining in the contest as Hilbert led 62-54.
  • However, the Mounties responded with a 14-5 run to grab their second lead of the half with 5:47 left on the clock.
  • A three from Nathan Moore gave the Hawks their lead back, but a layup on the other end of the floor knotted the contest up once again at 70 all.
  • After the teams traded buckets and leads, a huge offensive rebound from Moore allowed Briggs to bury a jumper with 50 seconds left to put Hilbert up by three.
  • Perez and Briggs took turns at the line attempting to close out the game. After a miss from Briggs gave the Mounties the ball down three points, an airball with one second left would be the last action of the game as the Hawks concluded their season with the victory.

GAME NOTES

Mount Aloysius relied on scoring from inside, with a 48-32 advantage in paint points in the game.

The Hawks can attribute their success on the scoreboard to their efficiency from the line, making 21 of their 26 attempts.
