Hawks Earn 49-Point AMCC Win at Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. – Hilbert College Men's Basketball continue to roll through their opponents this semester as they sprinted to a 49-point road win at Alfred State College tonight.

The 7-1 Hawks recorded their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory with the 94-45 win against the 1-7 Saxons.

The last time the men's program opened with a 7-1 record was in the 2015-16 season when the Hawks finished as the AMCC regular season champs and an appearance in the title game.

Their 49 point victory broke the previous record set February 12, 2019.

HIGHLIGHTS

12 Hawks put points on the board tonight and were led by Quran Briggs who tossed in 25 points off 10-of-14 shooting from the field.  He connected on three-of-four 3-pointers and made a pair of free throws while securing nine rebounds.

Shaheem Ellis and Larry Morse tossed in 14 points each.  Ellis dished five assists and Morse, who pulled down nine rebounds, hit 6-of-9 shots in the paint.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hilbert started fast – scoring on nine of their first 11 possessions building a 22-4 lead.
  • A pair of makes at the charity stripe by Trevon Alexis set the 20-point separation which stretched to a 25-point spread with just under five minutes left in the first half.
  • Briggs collected 15 points, Morse added 12 points and eight rebounds and Ellis chipped in 10 by intermission.  Ronnie Lewis added three assists and Joshua Polk pulled down four rebounds off the bench.
  • Hilbert continued to play with confidence and took off early in the second half, scoring three quick layups to build a 30-point difference just two minutes later.
  • A Briggs step-back 3-pointer at 11:55 set the 70-38 score but the Hawks weren't finished yet.
  • It continued with an Alexis' foul line jumper before Justin Poumpey connected on a Luke Rybicki offensive rebound kick-out.  Polk made a full-court feed to Rybicki who converted a 3-point play making it a 38-point spread.
  • Sonny Williams repeated Rybicki's last trip down the floor, and Andy Herrick's strike from downtown stretched it to 40 points.
  • Kevin Alvarado finished a tipin in the paint and Williams paired back-to-back layups as time expired establishing the Hawks largest margin of victory since their 106-62 AMCC win over Pitt-Bradford.
GAME NOTES
  • The Hawks burned the nets in the second half with a blistering 54.6% field goal percentage.  They held Alfred State to 31.5% while finishing the full game hitting 51.4% from the field.
  • Hilbert just wanted the game more than the Pioneers as they recorded a 56-19 advantage on the boards.
  • The Hawks built a 20-4 margin on points off turnovers, 22-4 in 2nd chance points, 34-15 in bench points, 56-24 in points in the paint and 21-3 in fast break points.
  • Joshua Polk was the only Hawk to reach double figure rebounds with 10, and Jamarius Johnson worked for four rebounds in six minutes.
