Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Kara Rehbaum

Hawks Dominated the Soaring Eagles

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College Men's Basketball continued their impressive play as they rolled to a 97-67 non-conference victory over the visiting Soaring Eagles from Elmira College this afternoon.

Four Hawks notched double-figure points, two recorded a double double, and the Hawks' point-guard combo combined for 14 assists in the win over their third Empire 8 opponent this week.

HIGHLIGHTS

Quran Briggs elevated for 24 points, hitting 11-of-17 from the floor, pulled down seven rebounds and swiped a game-high three steals while Nathan Moore connected on 6-of-9 from downtown to follow with 18 points.

Shaheem Ellis (6 pts) recorded eight assists and Justin Poumpey (9 pts, off 4-of-7 shooting) added six as they quarterbacked the Hawks to the 30-point win.

The one-two punch of Larry Morse (12 points/12 rebounds) and Ronnie Lewis (12 points/13 rebounds) was too much for Elmira to handle in the paint.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elmira started the game with a lot of energy and held their last lead in the game (5-4) just two minutes into the contest.
  • Ronnie Lewis' made free throw started the Hilbert run which featured a pair of 3-pointers from Nathan Moore that gave the Hawks an 8-point lead just nine minutes later.
  • Elmira knotted the score twice (18-18 and 24-24) but Hilbert took off before intermission and finished the half with a long 2-point make by Shaheem Ellis and another triple by Moore.
  • Briggs' three-point play at 15:39 gave the Hawks an 18-point lead (52-34) but a few empty offensive trips and defensive miscues sliced the margin to 12.
  • Moore (2) Malachi Hartley and Briggs struck from deep before Ellis and Larry Morse added points 15 feet or in which made it a 22-point spread.
  • Hilbert found success from other players from the perimeter as well.  Sonny Williams, Luke Rybicki, Jamarius Johnson and Justin Poumpey tickled the twine beyond the arc as Lewis, Briggs and Kevin Alvarado battled for buckets in the lane before time expired.
GAME NOTES
  • Hilbert shot significantly better than Elmira, especially in the second half (66.67% FG, 69.23% from 3PT), which helped them dominate the game.
  •  Hilbert held edges in 2nd chance points (12-2) and points in paint (42-36) even though the Hawks shot so well from the perimeter.
UP NEXT

Hilbert 5-1 will look for a clean sweep against the Empire 8 league when they travel to Alfred University Tuesday, November 26th for a 7pm game in the McLane Center.
