THE OPPONENT
Alfred University comes into the contest 2-1, and on a two game win streak after dropping week one 10-7 to Hobart. The Saxons have lit up the scoreboard at Yunevich Stadium, with 109 points in two games at home this season. Alfred took down Juniata College 64-28 in week two, before coming out of their bye with a 45-15 week four victory over Catholic University.
The high powered offense of the Saxons features both the pass and the run evenly, with 636 yards through the air and 604 on the ground. Quarterback Chris Kelly has enjoyed a nice start to the year, going 40-60 with 613 yards and six touchdowns to go with just one interception. Much of Kelly's production has been to Dion Anderson as the receiver has 23 grabs for 437 yards and four touchdowns. On the ground, Alfred has three 100-yard rushers on the year already, as Max Freeman IV (230), Braden Alexander (106) and Noah Hill (103) have all reached the century mark.
Defensively, eight Saxons have totaled double-digit tackles on the year, with Landon Spencer pacing the squad with 21. Adam Meitz has two of the three interceptions for Alfred, while Spencer has the lone fumble recovery for a unit that allows under 18 points a game.
Alfred is coached by Bob Rankl, who is in his 11th season with the Saxons. Rankl was appointed 27th Head Coach of the Alfred University football team prior to the 2014 season after serving 15 years as an assistant for the Saxons. Since taking over the team, Rankl has become one of the most successful coaches in the nearly 125-year-old program, becoming the fastest coach to earn 40 wins at the helm.Â
