HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert College Men's Soccer hosted the team's final regular season game on Hawk Field this afternoon when La Roche came to town for a contest that held playoff implications.
The Hawks took down the Redhawks in decisive fashion, earning a 6-1 victory. The win locked up the fourth seed in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, the highest in team history, and set up a home playoff game next Saturday, November 2nd.
After
Jason Vullo worked to draw a foul in the La Roche box,
John Schroth stepped up to the spot and scored his third penalty of the season to open the scoring in the 11th minute. However, a long free kick from the Redhawks resulted in the equalizer in the 12th minute making the Hilbert lead short-lived.
The teams ramped up the physicality, trading fouls after the La Roche goal, before Hilbert broke the tie once again in the 22nd minute.
Ryan Michelsen did well to win the ball back, before finding
Chris Smith who slotted the ball in the bottom corner to make it 2-1. The scoring continued, as Schroth's second penalty of the game, and his fourth of the season, extended the lead to 3-1 in the 35th minute. Smith added a second as
Jacob Korte played a ball through to
Cam Murdie, who found Smith to send the Hawks to the break with a commanding 4-1 advantage.
When play resumed in the second half,
Carter Burke added a fifth goal in style, curling a free kick around the Redhawks wall in the 69th minute for his fifth goal of the season. Three minutes later,
Jason Vullo's volley put an exclamation point on the contest, making it 6-1, giving the Hawks their biggest win of the season.
