Two First Half Goals Lift Men's Soccer Over Altoona 2-0

HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert Men's Soccer hosted Penn State Altoona this afternoon in the team's fourth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game of the season, and second at home. The Hawks used a pair of first half goals to take down the Lions and improve to 2-2 in the AMCC, good enough for fifth in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hawks came out aggressively this afternoon, battling through 50/50 balls and pressuring Penn State Altoona into poor decisions all first half. This led to Hilbert generating quick and sudden offense on both the team's goals in the opening 45 minutes.

After Jason Vullo forced a corner kick, John Schroth sent Cam Murdie a long ball behind the Altoona defense. A quick turn freed up Murdie, who found Chris Smith wide open on the back post for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 Hilbert advantage.

The second goal for the Hawks came after a quick restart from a free kick. After getting fouled, Carter Burke quickly resumed play and found Ryan Michelsen in the box for his first of the year to double the lead 30 minutes into the contest. The Michelsen tally would be the last shot on goal of the half as Hilbert took the 2-0 lead into the break.

Penn State Altoona turned on the pressure in the second half, taking eleven shots in the second 45 of this once after firing just a pair of shots in the first half. Only two of the Lions' attempts found the target, but Hilbert goalkeeper Daniel Downes stayed sharp, stopping both to preserve the clean sheet and the team's second AMCC win of the year.

GAME NOTES
  • The 2-0 victory is the team's first victory over the Lions since the 2014 season and their second AMCC clean sheet of the season.
  • Smith and Michelsen each recorded their first conference goals of the campaign.
  • Luciano Gallo, Carter Burke, Jason Vullo, and Gavin Cline each took a shot on net.
