Football Enjoys Best Offensive Output of the Season Against St. John Fisher

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert Football hosted St. John Fisher this afternoon at St. Francis High School for the third Empire 8 contest of the season for the Hawks. While Hilbert outgained the Cardinals on the ground today, the passing attack of the visitors made the difference in a 52-6 St. John Fisher win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a penalty set the Hawks back on their first possession causing them to punt, the Cardinals rode a pair of Camden Chance rushing scores to an early 14-0 advantage after the first quarter.

Hilbert looked to respond with a long, methodical drive that saw Mike Hanlon gain 57 yards on the ground, but a fourth down stop by the Fisher defense kept it a 14-0 game. The Cardinals used a 53-yard Ryan Whitney to Jackson Cusack touchdown to make it 21-0 with 6:19 to go in the half.

The Hilbert rushing attack picked up where they left off on the ensuing possession, as the offensive line opened up a hole that allowed Hanlon to outrun the defense and get the Hawks on the board with an 81-yard rushing score. The quick strike, which was the longest play in program history, made it a 21-6 contest just twelve seconds after the Fisher score.

A third rushing score for Chance, and a fumble recovered in the endzone, gave the Cardinals 14 more points and a 35-6 lead heading into the locker room.

A pass breakup by Scotty Winchell on third down, and an incomplete pass on fourth down gave the Hawks' offense the ball at their own 21 after the opening Cardinals' drive of the half. However, a first-play fumble set the St. John Fisher offense up in the redzone where they would capitalize with a second passing touchdown of the afternoon by Whitney, this time to Mykel White.

After the Cardinals' defense forced a three and out, Xavier Johnson came up with a big third-down sack to force a punt and return the ball to the Hawks' offense.

A pair of Hilbert punts in the fourth quarter led to a touchdown and a field goal for the Cardinals to wrap up the scoring with Fisher taking this Empire 8 matchup 52-6.
