HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert College Football hosted SUNY Brockport at Frontier High School this afternoon in the first meeting between the Hawks and Golden Eagles. The nationally ranked defense of Brockport pitched their third consecutive shutout as the visitors took this one 51-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Brockport set the tone early as Isaiah Simmons took the game's opening play from scrimmage 64 yards to open the scoring just 13 seconds in. A pair of passing touchdowns from Ben Gocella (to Daniel Manneh and Nolan Slywka), and another Simmons score made it a 28-0 advantage after the first quarter.
The Hawks began to move the ball well on a nine-play drive split between the first and second quarters, but an incomplete pass on third down forced Hilbert to punt.
Bryce Robinson totaled 27 yards on the drive as he and quarterback
Brody Hopkins connected for a 15-yard gain, before the junior wide-receiver took a pitch twelve yards to end the first quarter.
After the punt on the ensuing drive, Slywka caught his second touchdown of the game, a 43-yard score to make it 34-0.
Matt Bertke broke through the interior of the Brockport line to block the extra point attempt and keep a point off the scoreboard. Slywka would add his third receiving touchdown of the contest to make it 41-0, which is what the scoreboard would show as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
Brockport picked up right where they left off when the half began, finding the end zone after an eight-play, 57-yard drive to begin the half. The Golden Eagles tacked on a field goal later in the quarter to make it 51-0 going into the game's final quarter.
Each team saw the ball twice in the fourth quarter, but the scoreboard avoided any changes after a punt and a fumble from Hilbert, and a punt and a drive that ended with a kneel down for the Golden Eagles.
