Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Andrew Loveless

Hawks Could Not Overcome First-Half Deficit vs Mount Aloysius

CRESSON, PA – Hilbert Men's Basketball dropped their third straight game this afternoon in a 73-63 defeat to the Mounties from Mount Aloysius. The teams played an even second half, but the ten-point lead built in the first half by Mount Aloysius was the difference.

HIGHLIGHTS

Quran Briggs and Shaheem Ellis led the way on both ends of the court of the Hawks in this one. Briggs scored a team-high 15 points while swiping three steals.

Ellis scored 14 points for the Hawks, while also recording four rebounds and four steals in the game.

Kyreese Fisher filled up the box score for Hilbert, scoring five points, to go along with six rebounds, four assists and one steal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams got out to a back-and-forth start, finding themselves knotted up at 14 a little under halfway through the first half.
  • A quick 10-2 run from the Mounties pulled the hosts ahead by eight, forcing a Hilbert timeout.
  • The Hawks cut the lead to five points on a three from Ellis, but four quick points reinforced the lead for Mount Aloysius.
  • The offense of Mount Aloysius kept the points coming as they extended their lead to ten points to head into halftime.
  • Briggs got Hilbert going early in the second half, turning a steal into points on the other end to cut the lead to six points three and a half minutes in.
  • After the Hawks and the Mounties traded buckets, Trevon Alexis and Sonny Williams made back-to-back buckets to make it a four-point game.
  • However, Mount Aloysius responded with points of their own to regain their ten-point advantage on a free throw with 5:39 to go.
  • Quality free throw shooting down the stretch by the Mounties prevented the Hawks from getting back in the game and secured the conference win for the home side.
GAME NOTES

Hilbert held decisive advantages in second chance points (20-3) and points off turnovers (19-5) despite even rebounding and turnover numbers in the game.

Advantages in bench points (28-10) and points in the paint (36-22) helped Mount Aloysius build and maintain their lead.
