HAMBURG, NY – Hilbert Men's Basketball got back to their winning ways today with an 81-71 conference victory at home against Penn State Altoona. The Hawks controlled the game, holding the lead for all but 1:15 in the contest.
HIGHLIGHTS
Halfway through the first half,
Quran Briggs hit a three pointer to give him 1,000 points in his impressive career at Hilbert. The Junior guard finished the game with 20 points, tying teammate
Edward Perez for the high in the game.
Perez also pulled down eleven rebounds for yet another double-double on the season.
Shaheem Ellis and
Jahmel Demery led the way for the Hilbert bench unit. The duo combined for 22 points, with 12 and 10 respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edward Perez got things going early, with a layup four seconds into the contest.
- Hilbert scored the first six points of the game, but Altoona stayed right with the Hawks early on, tying the game at twelve.
- After a dunk took the lead for Altoona, Ellis hit two threes and Briggs started to heat up after reaching the 1k milestone.
- Briggs scored eleven points in a row for the Hawks to extend the lead to ten points with less than ten minutes to go in the half.
- The teams traded buckets for the remainder of the half, which led to Hilbert taking an eight-point advantage into the locker room.
- Altoona came out of the half firing from three, cutting the lead to just one point on a pair of deep makes.
- However, the Hawks seemed to always have an answer in this one as they immediately extended their lead and held a comfortable advantage for the rest of the game.
- Hilbert executed on both ends of the floor down the stretch to secure the ten-point conference win.
GAME NOTES
In large part due to the efforts of Ellis and Demery, the Hawks held a large lead in bench points in the contest (33-19).
Hilbert did a lot of their damage in the paint in the game, outscoring Altoona 38-24 inside.

The Hawks begin a stretch of three straight road games beginning on Wednesday, January 24
th. The team will head to the Orvis Activities Center to take on Alfred State College for a 7 PM tip off.
