Men's Soccer Blanks Carlow in AMCC Victory

HAMBURG, N.Y. -  The Hilbert College Men's Soccer team opened the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule with an impressive 3-0 victory over a first-year league opponent, Carlow University.

The Hawks spent most of their time attacking and winning the first balls against the Celtics as they improved to 2-5 and 1-0 in AMCC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a scoreless first period and a 15-minute half time break, Hilbert dominated the second half.

Carter Burke's long centering pass from the left sideline allowed Jason Vullo a 1 v 1 opportunity in front of the net just five minutes into the second half.   Sixteen minutes later, those two hooked-up again.  Carter placed the ball near Vullo's feet outside the box, and the sophomore forward plastered it past the outstretched hands of the keeper to the bottom left corner.

Hilbert continued to pound the ball forward as they finished with nine second-half corner kicks.

Andrew Herstek delivered multiple opportunities for Hilbert;  his first center finished with a solid header from Cam Murdie, but the Carlow keeper made a catlike save.  The second feed resulted in off-side goal which never made it to the scoreboard.  But his final serve was at the perfect height for Cam Murdie's hard-shot header to the net.

Jacob Donner, Chris Smith and Reese Tomporowski limited the action for goalie Logan Peck who finished the game making one save against four shots.

The senior keeper now shares the lead with three other alums with two career shutouts.  He is also only three games away from becoming the program's All Time Leader in Wins (needs 10).

GAME NOTES

Hilbert led 14-1 in shots on goal, and 10-5 in corner kicks.
Seven different Hawks were credited with shots on goal, led by Vullo's four and Burke's three.

OLD game note which should have been mentioned after the Hawks last home game
  • After only 23 games, sophomore Carter Burke become the program-leader in Penalty Kicks made (5) and taken (7) .
UP NEXT

The Hawks return to action next weekend when they travel to Cresson, Pa. for another AMCC double header.  The men's soccer game will kick off at 3:15 pm.
