HAMBURG, N.Y. – Hilbert women's soccer found themselves in a tightly contested battle today with the Highlanders of Houghton. However, a two-goal second half propelled Houghton to a hard fought 2-0 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Solid team defense, and quality goalkeeping on both sides led to a scoreless first half in this one. Hilbert goalkeeper,
Jordan Brown, stopped all five shots sent her way, while her counterpart in the Highlander's goal, Alliah Fluent, made two stops.
It looked like this game was heading for a 0-0 draw, until a corner kick opportunity led to the Houghton breakthrough in the 65th minute. Rileigh Studley found Natlie Milne on the back post following a scramble in the Hilbert box to take a 1-0 lead. The lead would be doubled with an Aivery Shuck tally in the 82nd minute, effectively putting the game out of reach. Hilbert turned up the pressure late, looking to end the Highlanders shutout with shots from
Grace Zabawa and
Gabrielle Avallone, but they could not beat Fluent who ended with six saves.
GAME NOTES
- Brown ended with nine saves.
- Avallone sent three shots on the Houghton net.
- Zabawa took a pair of shots on goal.
