JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Hilbert College Baseball team suffered a pair of set-backs tonight in their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference double header against Mount Aloysius College.
The Hawks dropped the 10-6 opener to the Mounties before falling 11-7 in the nightcap.
Hilbert (22-16) concluded the most successful regular season schedule and will now focus on the 2023 AMCC postseason tournament which opens next Saturday. Â With one additional AMCC DH still to be completed, the overall seeds in the tournament have not been determined.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1:Â
The Mounties pounded in seven runs through two innings, fueled by a trio of home runs, and then built an 9-2 lead by the top of the 6th. Â The Hawks responded with four runs, two the final two frames but ran out of time in the opening game.
Game 2:
Hilbert opened the nightcap with a 2-run lead through the middle of the 2nd inning. Â The Mounties stacked six runs on the board by the top of the 4th and added five more in the bottom of the 7th. Â The Hawks responded with five runs in the 8th but were blanked in their 9th inning rally, falling 11-7.
- Patrick Whelan knocked his first at bat over the fence scoring the first two runs on the game. Â
- Mount Aloysius connected two more times, one in the second (3RBI) and again in the third, poking four home runs over the course of the double header tonight.
- Whelan went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Â The Hawks manufactured only six hits, one from Thomas Evans (1 run), John Rivieri-Vejas (1 run) and Alex Ellison (RBI).Â
- Michael Contini (3-3) set a new single season record tonight with his 11th start. Â He allowed six runs off five hits in three innings. Â Brendan Walsh collected all four of Hilbert's strike outs while allowing eight hits and five runs through 3.2 innings.Â
UP NEXT
Hilbert has secured a spot in the 2023 postseason but will have to wait to see where they will be seeded after the Monday, May 1st Pitt Bradford vs Pitt-Greensburg double header is played.
