Baseball Falls In 9-inning Game

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.  – The Hilbert Baseball team fell in an 8-2 defeat to Delaware Valley University on day two at the Ripken Experience Tournament hosted in South Carolina.

The Hawks were in the game until the 8th inning when the Aggies pulled away for the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Thomas Evans' double at the start of the game plated lead-off hitter John Riviere-Vejas in the top of the first inning.  The Hawks defense turned a double play in the bottom of half prior to the Aggies knotting the game at 1-1.
  • Emmanuel McClain moved around the bags and back home off a Griffin McAndrews at bat which lifted Hilbert 2-1 but Delaware Valley responded with a two-hit, three-run bottom of the 2nd to go up 4-2.
  • Both teams' played solid defense through the middle innings, as they each turned a double play to hold the score at 4-2,  but Delaware Valley's first batter connected for a home run in the bottom of the 6th.
  • The Hawks struggled to string multiple hits together the rest of the game while the Aggies stranded runners each inning until they put the game away by recording three runs off a bases-loaded jam.
Thomas Evans recorded an RBI double and went 2-for-4 at the plate.   Both John Riviere-Vejas and Emmanuel McClain earned two hits and McAndrews was credited with the second RBI in the game.

John Riviere-Vejas (2), Patrick Whelan (2) and Jariros Santos helped turn Hilbert's two double plays today.

Brennen Hediger (0-1) gave up five hits, one earned run, and struck out four in the five innings on the mound.
