MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Hilbert College Softball team opened up their season today at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. They played a double header today taking on Wilkes University and Delaware Valley University.
The first game did not go
Hilbert's
way as they stopped the game after 5 innings with Hilbert falling by a score of
15-3
. The day did not get any better for the Hawks as they would lose both games on opening day
.

Game 1: Wilkes University 15 - Hilbert College 3
Game 2: Delaware Valley University 22 - Hilbert College 1
Game One:

Bailey Budziszeski in the first inning hit a single to left field which helped to bring in Makenna Smith who was on first base after she led the Hawks off with a single.

The Hawks managed to hold off Wilkes offense for the first inning as they were only able to score 2 runs. The Hawks defense managed to throw out 2 runners this inning and also caught a line drive to keep them in the game.

The second inning was a struggle both offensively and defensively for the Hawks though as they would go 3 up and 3 down and then they would let up 3 more runs on defense.

Again in the third inning the Hawks were held hitless as all three batters would strikeout looking.

The bottom of the third inning is where Hilbert began to struggle. Wilkes managed to score 10 runs and truly put the game out of reach. The Hawks made a few switches this inning including bringing Brionna Raiser-Russell and Brenna Mulvaney in at pitcher.

The Hawks managed to keep Wilkes hitless in the fourth inning but they were also unable to score themselves leaving them a mountain to climb to get back into the game.

They did manage to score 2 runs though with Makenna Smith hitting a single and bringing in Tayler Avery. Gina Salerno was also able to bring in Kate Sanjek to score their third run of the game.
Game Two:

Starting off the game for the Hawks was Avery Cusack who managed to get on base and eventually work her way to third where Emma Gionta hit a single and brought her home for the first run.

Brittany McAndrews started the game as a pitcher for the Hawks. In the first inning Delaware Valley jumped out to a 6-1 lead following a strong inning.

The Hawks managed to get 2 runners in scoring positions in the second with 2 outs but they were unable to bring anyone home. The Hawks managed to keep Delaware Valley to only 2 runs to keep the game within striking distance.

Again though the Hawks were unable to score while their opponents boasted another strong inning on offense where they would tally 7 runs.

The Hawks made a switch in the fourth inning where Bailey Budziszewski would take over on the mound. Delaware Valley University would yet again continue their scoring hot streak getting 7 more runs.

The Hawks needed an incredible inning to remain in the game but would fall short. The game would end in the fifth inning and the Hawks lost by a score of 22-1.

The Hawks continue on with the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic tomorrow where they have another double header. They will face Lancaster Bible College at 3 PM and then Clarks Summit University at 5 PM.
