Converse Leads Hawks At Medaille

BUFFALO, N.Y.  – The Hilbert College Men's Volleyball team battled in another Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match tonight.

The Hawks (6-11) fell in four-sets to Medaille University (5-11, 1-5 AMCC) in the Sullivan Center and moved to 3-4 in league standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chris Laboy's solo block at the end of the first set's opening rally gave Hilbert a 1-0 lead.  That was the last time the Hawks were up the rest of the set. Hilbert kept it a 2-point game until Medaille built a 10-6 lead, and that four point separation held for a majority of the set.  The Hawks finished with 10 kills and four blocks before they dropped the 25-20 loss.
  • Hilbert hit better in the second set (.174) but had to play catch-up the entire game. The Hawks collected nine kills but committed six service errors while the Mavericks transition well to a .625 hitting percent in the 25-17 win.
  • Hilbert took an early lead and continued to roll the rest of the third set.  Hilbert, with a 6-5 advantage, went on a four-point run setting the tone for the rest of the set.  Medaille pulled within one (17-16) but three Hilbert kills and a pair of Mavs' errors led the Hilbert win. The Hawks improved their hitting percent to .375 earning eight kills with only two hitting errors.  Hilbert again was success at the net jumping for four more blocks which forced the Mavericks to eight attack errors.
  • Two Hilbert kills gave the Hawks the early lead again.  The Royal and White held on through an 11-11 score and pushed to a 2-point margin on multiple runs.  The Hawks held a 22-20, stretched it to 23-21 but witnessed the Mavs jump ahead 24-23. Brad Converse knotted the game at 24-all before Hilbert committed a service error.  Medaille scored the match point win at the net for the a 26-24 victory.
Hilbert earned 47 points, 38 kills, a season-low one service ace, eight blocks, 37 assists and 39 digs while the Mavs scored 61 points, 49 kills, seven aces, 48 assists and 44 digs for the win.

Brad Converse earned a season-high 17 kills with an impressive .500 hitting percentage off of 26 attempts and the Hawks' solo service ace.  Alex Overhoff added 10 digs and led the Hawks with nine digs.  Converse, Overhoff and Mehkai Francis (2 block assists) as well as Chris Laboy each collected a solo block.  Austin Chandler was credited with 19 assists while Ryan Levick added 16 as they shared duties with two sets played each.
