Hawks Face the Saints In the Puerto Rico Classico

BAYAMON, PR – The Hilbert College Women's Basketball team faced Emmanuel College (MA) for the first time in program history at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez on their first day competing in the Puerto Rico Classico.

The Hawks (1-9) dropped a 71-36 non-conference contest to the Saints (5-6).

HIGHLIGHTS

Kelsey Schlagenhauf tossed in 15 points, hitting 5-of-9 from the field and 5-of-9 at the foul line while earning eight rebounds.  Alesia Hamm added eight points and six rebounds and Belle Oakley chipped in six points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Schlagenhauf opened the scoring for Hilbert breaking the 9-0 Saints run in the first two minutes of the contest.  The Hawks pulled themselves back in the game slicing the margin to two points (15-13) after Belle Oakley knocked down her three-pointer at 3:00.  Emmanuel scored a fast-break layup and then converted a 3-point play to go back up 20-13 by the start of the second quarter.
  • Hilbert couldn't buy a basket in the second session (0-12) as their only point came from the foul line midway through quarter.
  • Emmanuel maintained their double-digit lead through the third quarter while limiting Hilbert to another 13-point period.  Schlagenhauf led with five points in a combination of free throws and points in the paint while Hamm converted a pair from the field.
  • Schlagenhauf scored six of the Hawks nine points in the fourth quarter.  She and Avery Cusack each were credited with a made bucket along with a make from the charity stripe before the final horn.
GAME NOTES
  • Emmanuel controlled the pace of the game from start to finish.  Their 32 points off turnovers came from 17 fast-break points.
  • The Hawks were able to score 16 points in the paint, and earned 12 of their 33 rebounds on the offensive glass.
  • Hilbert finished the game hitting 12-of-50 from the floor and 11-of 16 at the foul line while the Saints hit 41.2% from the field, made 5-of-15 3-pointers but struggled from the foul line hitting only 10-of-23 attempts.
