Hawks Struggle to Hold Onto the Ball

HAMBURG, N.Y.  – Houghton University turned Hilbert College turnovers into points in the paint as the Highlanders stole a 61-34 victory from the Hawks.

The Hawks shot the ball well from the foul line, but they were unable to get into an offensive groove falling to 0-3 at the start of the season.

HIGHLIGHTS

Kelsey Schlagenhauf led the Hawks in scoring, connecting on 3-of-7 from the field and 4-of-6 at the foul line.

Alesia Hamm and Maria Spinelli were a perfect 2-for-2 at the charity stripe, while Kayla Johnson knocked down 5-of-6 and led the Hawks with six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Houghton built an 18-5 lead after 10 minutes as Hilbert gave away eight possessions off turnovers.  Schlagenhauf and Johnson's makes at the foul line added to a jumper by Mackenzie Catan in the opening quarter.
  • The Hawks held onto the ball much better in the second session but hit only 25% from the field (3-12) falling behind 25-14 at intermission.
  • Houghton opening the second half with a ¾ court press and that forced the Hawks into eight more give aways and the Highlanders continued to force the pace in the fourth quarter outscoring Hilbert 36-19 in the second half.
GAME NOTES
  • Hilbert corralled 13 of their 32 rebounds on the offensive glass but finished with five second-chance points.
  • The Highlanders' long legs and arms helped facilitate their pressure on the ball or in the press that led to turnovers as well as their nine blocked shots.
  • Hilbert finished the game hitting 22.7% from the floor, made one three-point shot and went 13-16 at the foul line.  Houghton's 44.6% from the field was a result of fast-break layups after steals or penetration where they recorded 38 points in the paint.
UP NEXT

Hilbert (0-3) doesn't play again until they open-up the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference portion of their game schedule after the Thanksgiving break.  The Hawks will host Alfred State College in a double header with the men's programs Wednesday, November 29th.
